The RCIA is the way the Catholic church welcomes new members. It is a formation process whereby inquirers are introduced to the Faith of Catholics. It is based on an introduction to the scriptures of the Old and New Testaments as well as the worship and rites of the Catholic Church. It is not a "class in Catholicism" but rather an opportunity to experience first hand how Catholics believe and worship. Inasmuch as it is meant for individuals who have questions and interest in Catholic belief, there is an opportunity to speak to ordinary Catholics and hear stories of their faith journey. Moreover, inasmuch as the RCIA is an inquiry experience, there is no obligation on the part of anyone to "join the church". A person's coming to faith is a gradual process, which grows slowly, by thoughtful reflection and the guidance of God's spirit.
Our Lady of Lourdes is somewhat unique in having a year-round catechumenate. This means that, after an initial interview, you can join group that is in process almost immediately.
You will have the opportunity to listen to the faith stories of other inquirers with the help of facilitators who guide the group.
Some of the the initial questions you would expect to discuss would be:
What does it mean to be called a Catholic?
What are the basic beliefs of Catholics?
In what way is the Catholic Church the same and different from other churches?
Who is Jesus Christ?
Why would I want to share faith with this community?
If you are interested in joining an RCIA group, or if you want more information call Our Lady of Lourdes church at 896-0241.
